This month, we would like to recognize Lindsay Usher, a volunteer who is involved in many different ways, including leading the Marketing Committee and serving on the Bottoms Up Bash Committee (among other things)! We greatly appreciate all of her hard work to help raise awareness and support the Colon Cancer Prevention Project! Learn a little bit about Lindsay below.
*How did you get involved with The Project?
When I moved back to Louisville from South Florida, I knew I wanted to volunteer for a non-profit organization that meant something to me. My boyfriend’s mother is a colon cancer survivor and has shared many stories about her fight against colon cancer with me. When I found out about the Colon Cancer Prevention Project, and after meeting with Lindy and learning more about all of the advocacy the Project does, I knew that this was the perfect opportunity to put some of my non-profit background to good use. I feel very fortunate to have met and to work with the dynamic group of volunteers and staff at the Project.
*Why Louisville?
I was born and raised in Louisville, but had been living in South Florida for the past 4 years. In 2013 I started my own marketing and technology training business, Dotz Connections, and it allowed me the freedom to work from anywhere so I’ve been able to move back home to be closer to family and friends. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to live somewhere else, but Louisville is truly my home and I am amazed at the change in the city (i.e. the arts, entertainment, downtown development and new dining) in the short number of years I’ve been gone.
*What is your favorite restaurant in Louisville?
Tony BoomBozz
*What is one interesting fact about you that most people don’t know?
When I was younger I once sailed for 5 days in Lake Ontario on a 130 foot wooden sailboat that was built in the early 1900’s. We lived, worked and ate on the boat including hoisting the sails, steering the ship, standing anchor watches and helping cook meals in the galley.
*What is your motto you live by?
“Surround yourself with people who make you hungry for life, touch your heart, and nourish your soul”
*What is some advice you were given long ago and still live by?
My mom has always told me “You’ll never know unless you try.” This is true for everything—success, love, life, adventures, friendships. If something good comes of it, cherish it… If something bad comes of it, learn from it but don’t let it hold you back.
*What is your guilty pleasure? (Yes, we mean the one you are slightly embarrassed to admit.)
If I have absolutely nothing to do, I love nothing more than to vedge out in front of the TV with a bowl of white Mexican cheese dip & chips and watch mindless TV.
*If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
I would tour Italy—Visit the old buildings in Rome, tour the city of Venice in a gondola on the waterways and check out the seaside villages…and of course eat lots of pizza!
*If you could trade places with anyone in the world (dead or alive) for a month, who would choose and why?
I would trade places with someone like Ellen DeGeneres because she has the funds, network and power to impact people in need or those who deserve it AND she gets to interview interesting people.
