Passage of Smoking Cessation Bill supports Colon Cancer Prevention Project’s Mission

The Colon Cancer Prevention Project is thrilled by the announcement of the passage of Kentucky Senate Bill 89, an act relating to insurance coverage for tobacco cessation treatment.

This bill will make medication and the services designed to help smokers quit much more accessible under Medicaid and private insurance. This bill passed with the endorsement and full support of the Colon Cancer Prevention Project.

“The Project believes in supporting every effort to aid in the reduction of colon cancer,” said Project CEO Dave Bell. “The scientific community agrees that smoking cessation reduces colon cancer risks. That is why we advocated so hard for the passage of this bill.”

According to a study published in the Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology in 2011, the age of colorectal onset was lower in current smokers than any other sample group. The Center for Disease Control concurs, adding that there are more than 7,000 different chemicals, many of which are toxic and linked with the development of a variety of cancers, including colorectal.

There many ways to reduce your risk of developing colon cancer and smoking cessation is crucial to those prevention efforts. We’re glad that Kentuckians will be able to get the help they need to quit smoking!
