August Volunteer of the Month, Mia Starcevic

This month, we would like to recognize Mia Starcevic as our Volunteer of the Month!  Mia has helped in many ways since she got involved with the Project earlier this year.  Learn more about her below!

*How did you get involved with The Project?

I attended a public health networking fair in hopes of finding an organization in which I could complete my senior year internship credit. From the very first meeting, Patty and Lindy were encouraging, welcoming, and exuded their excitement for “kicking butt,” inspiring me to feel impassioned to kick butt, too!

*Why Louisville?

Louisville provided me with an opportunity to get a quality education and have new experiences, while being close enough to visit home in Danville. Plus, it helped that UofL was generous with its financial aid!

*What is your favorite restaurant in Louisville?

Shah’s Mongolian Grill. If you’re near Hurstbourne, you should try it. If you’re not near Hurstbourne, you should still try it. Bonus: you get to watch the talented chefs cook your food with wooden swords.

*What is one interesting fact about you that most people don’t know?

I think glazed doughnuts are the most deplorable food in the world. Just the smell of them makes me nauseous.

*What is your motto you live by?

“Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus”

*What is some advice you were given long ago and still live by?

“Pamet u glavu,” which is literally translated from Bosnian as “mind in your head,” but really means to think carefully and be judicious in your words and actions. My hardcore Bosnian mother would say it every time I left the house, and it stuck with me.

*What is your guilty pleasure? (Yes, we mean the one you are slightly embarrassed to admit.)

Binge-watching Pretty Little Liars or Gossip Girl on Netflix. I’m fully aware they are terrible shows, but I can’t help it.

*If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?

I would love to take an extended vacation to Ireland. It’s beautiful and has significant historical and cultural value, and I never had a chance to study abroad in college. I also want to go the the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

*If you could trade places with anyone in the world (dead or alive) for a month, who would choose and why?

Probably Emma Watson or Jennifer Lawrence. I admire their confidence, humor, talent, and all of the strides they are making for young women. If I had any acting ability, I would love to have had some of their roles. Also, getting to work with Bradley Cooper–‘nough said.
