Introducing our new screening navigator

Darla Vibbert, Screening Navigator

We are excited to introduce you to Darla Vibbert, who joined our team in June.

Darla fills a huge gap in the Louisville area, where we saw the need for someone who can link residents directly to various colon cancer screenings and resources.

Here, she shared a Q&A about herself and why she cares about this job:

Why this job?

I think my calling in life is to be a healer, whether that is in a literal hands on care giving role, or preventative. And this new role as a navigator is exciting to me because I think a lot of lives can be saved!

What do you tell patients who are nervous about getting screened for colon cancer?

I tell nervous patients that I have been through the prep and colonoscopy myself and it wasn’t as bad as I had built it up in my mind to be. And it was such a load off of my mind to have it “behind” me!

What’s one tip you’d give someone who has a family member who refuses to get screened?
A tip for those concerned about  persuading family members that refuse to be screened for colon cancer is to let them know about the option for a stool-based screening done in the privacy of their home if they are not high risk.
How do you celebrate when you learn that someone has gotten screened because of the work you did?
To celebrate, I usually tell someone in the office about how we are kicking butt!
Do you have any cute grandkids you’d like to tell us about?
I have a 4-year-old granddaughter named Katie who does not want to follow in the footsteps of her grandmother and be a nurse because she is going to be a princess! I also have two granddaughters in high school at Holy Cross that I am very proud of, Jenna and Brinley.
What’s one thing about you that few people know?
One thing people don’t know about me is that although I can be very quiet, I have a goofy sense of humor when you get to know me, and I have had a crush on Steve Martin for years!
Anything else you want to share?
My family thinks I am in the perfect job because I am detail oriented and have been accused of being “anal” more than once in my life! And I am happy to be working with such caring, purpose driven people!
